The Concept of the Mahdi
Mahdi is like Messiah in Judeo-Christianity. Many Muslims believe that the Mahdi, a descendant of Mohammed will come shortly before the day of resurrection and will establish a perfect kingdom of justice alongside Jesus. Funny how all religions have this same end of the world apocalypse crap. There is even a book called "the Approach of Armageddon" that is the "Left Behind" of the Islamic world. The Mahdi is never mentioned by Qu'ran, but exists only in the "hadith" (oral traditions of Mohammed). Belief in the Mahdi is split more or less along sectarian lines. Sufi's and Shia's commonly accept the idea of the Mahdi, while Sunni scholars do not. Some ordinary Sunni's also await the Mahdi, but they usually do not believe that Jesus will be involved in his kingdom. Throughout history many people have claimed to be the Mahdi. One of the most recent was Mohammad Abdullah al Querishi whose brother-in-law led an uprising at the Grand Mosque in Mecca in 1979. The seige lasted two weeks and hundreds of people were killed. Much of the mosque was destroyed. Many people, including Osama bin Laden, were angry at the Saudi government for their violent reaction. As a result, the royals agreed to roll back the modernization of Arabia and fund the system of schools that presently spread the propaganda of Al-Queda and other Jihadist organizations.

Yaroslav Trofimov discusses the Grand Mosque seige (video): http://fora.tv/2007/09/26/Yaroslav_Trofimov_on_Mecca_s_Forgotten_Uprisin...
Trofimov has a lot of important things to say, but he gets my vote for the Noam Chomsky Worst Public Speaker of the Year Award.
The clips from the movie "Khartoum" refer to Sudanese Sufi Muhammad Ahmad who declared himself Mahdi in 1882. He led an uprising against the Ottoman-Egyptian forces and set up his own state in Sudan. He only lived until 1885, but the Mahdists continued in power until 1899 when they were defeated by the British at the Battle of Omdurman. The current Sudanese flag honors him with a field of black.
